Genus: acer
Species: pseudoplatanus

A medium to large European hardwood of the acer (maple) genus, creamy-white with fine texture and sometimes with wavy grain producing fiddle-back figure. It is believed that this is the species used for the backs of Stradivarius violins.
From time to time we manage to obtain exotic woods from colonial homesteads et al,such as this superb fiddle-back sycamore and with a great deal of care taken in the drying process, one can be well rewarded. This piece was dried by vertically stacking, out of the elements and in a fairly dry atmosphere, thus retaining good colour.
