Medium to large deciduous hardwoods. Available every now and then from old colonial homesteads around Tasmania. Their large size making them worthwhile to quarter saw for cutting boards (see Ned's plats) etc.
Along with Tasmanian Blackwood, elm is one of the better bleaching timbers.

Image is of quarter sawn elm. Note the ray fleck (medullary ray) which is typical of pure quarter sawn timber.
Medullary rays are formations of, primarily, parenchyma cells which allow the radial transmission of sap.
